Engine Sensors and Actuators

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor

The MAP sensor reads the vacuum or pressure in the manifold. This sensor provides key information for all Electromotive speed density based fuel injection systems, and is also used with the HPV-3B vacuum advance and boost retard. The sensor is available in 3 varieties for normally aspirated or boosted engines.

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
The TPS is a potentiometer attached to the throttle shaft. A five volt signal is supplied to the sensor, and a variable voltage is returned to the TEC. The voltage increases as the throttle is opened. Four varieties of sensors are available from Electromotive. The TPS sensors of many late model vehicles can be used with the TEC products.

Coolant Temperature Sensor (CLT)

The CLT sensor measures the temperature of the coolant in the engine block. This negative temperature coefficient resistor provides a 2.8k ohm resistance at 70 degree F. Used by the TEC and HPV-3B products. Thread is 3/8" NPT.

Manifold Air Temperature (MAT)

The MAT measures incoming air temperature for the TEC speed density products only. The sensor screws into a 3/8" NPT threaded port which should locate the tip in the incoming air stream, but away from fuel.

Knock Sensor

The TEC and HPV-3B products make use of a piezoelectric microphone that is especially tuned to pickup engine vibrations created by knock (also called detonation or ping). The sensor has a 3/8" NPT thread for attachment to the engine block or cylinder head. Above approximately 5000 rpm, however, this knock may be masked by mechanical noise; Electromotive calibration software allows the user to program an upper rpm limit to disable the sensor.

Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) Sensor

The EGO sensor is an electrochemical cell used to measure the oxygen content of an engine's exhaust. In closed loop operation, TEC uses this signal to monitor and adjust fuel mixture. A heated sensor should be used with turbocharged applications and is required with TEC's Proportional Air Fuel (PAF) software. With PAF, the Electromotive TEC is the first fuel injection system to use heated EGO sensor to operate closed loop anywhere from 16:1 to 13.5:1 rich!

Actuators
Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor

The IAC motor is a 4 wire stepper motor completely under TEC control. The motor drives a pintle valve to control the bypassing of air around the throttle plates. This air control is used to stabilize engine idle speed and to compensate for occasional additional loads, such as an air conditioning compressor. Two GM style motors are available from Electromotive. The o-ring style, bolt-on motor uses an in-line 4 pin connector. If your throttle body does not have provisions for the GM style motor. One body provides two hose barbs so air can be plumbed with hoses to both sides of your air door. The other body is to be wrapped in an air filter and connected downstream of the throttle with one hose.
